Intense northeast monsoon floods Chennai streets, triggers traffic chaos and emergency response

Heavy northeast monsoon rains have flooded roads across Chennai, especially in the north, creating severe traffic snarls and prompting the deployment of emergency crews.

Since the northeast monsoon began on 17 October, Chennai has experienced intense downpours that dumped up to 10 cm of rain in less than an hour, particularly affecting North Chennai. The sudden deluge has flooded numerous streets, leading to prolonged traffic congestion and difficulty for residents to commute. In response, over 15,000 sanitation and civic workers were dispatched overnight to clear waterlogged roads, while the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Response Force deployed 100 personnel as a precautionary measure.

The National Disaster Response Force stands ready to assist if conditions worsen. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert through 23 October, forecasting very heavy rain across the state until 21 October. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid flooded areas, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and follow safety guidelines issued on social media.

Why it matters

The flooding disrupts daily life in Chennai and highlights the need for effective disaster preparedness during the monsoon season.
