Interim Interior Minister warns Romania's political deadlock could become a national disaster

Cătălin Predoiu, serving as interim minister of Internal Affairs, likened Romania's stalled government talks to the final moments of the Titanic and urged four Transylvanian leaders to reach a compromise.

Interim Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu posted on Facebook, drawing a parallel between Romania’s current government-formation impasse and the Titanic’s final moments, warning that the impact of failure is imminent. He claimed that a narrow window of “historic minutes” still exists for a last-ditch effort to avert a political disaster, but that the steering wheel cannot be pulled in opposite directions. Predoiu highlighted four political figures from Transylvania who, if they act collectively, could become the country’s saviors, though he did not name them.

He accused these leaders of prioritising electoral gains over the public good and argued that only a joint action can prevent the crisis from worsening. The minister also questioned whether the leaders will repair the broken coalition or turn the political failure into a national one, urging them to install a government without delay.

Why it matters

The deadlock threatens Romania's governance stability and could impact the economy and public confidence.
