Interim premier Bolojan to sign conditional pact with Niculescu to uphold deficit targets

Interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan will sign a conditional political support agreement with designated premier Luca Niculescu, pledging to keep Romania’s budget deficit goals unchanged.

Interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan said he will sign a conditional support accord with designated premier Luca Niculescu on Sunday, committing the future government to maintain the deficit targets set by previous administrations. The deal follows the PNL’s decision to vote for Niculescu’s cabinet despite shifting to the opposition benches. Described as a limited-time arrangement, it will remain in force until the state budget law is passed, a step Bolojan says is crucial for Romania’s EU fund access, investor trust and sovereign rating.

He cautioned that extending the political deadlock would erode public confidence in state institutions. While acknowledging the political risk for PNL, Bolojan stressed the necessity of a strong parliamentary backing to implement fiscal corrections. He added that if the agreement is not honoured, the party may file a motion of censure.

Why it matters

The pact ties political backing to fiscal discipline, affecting Romania’s EU funding, credit rating and economic stability.
