Intermountain Health plans downtown move for historic LDS Hospital

Intermountain Health’s board formally endorsed a downtown Salt Lake City location to serve as the replacement for LDS Hospital, which has operated in the Avenues since 1905. The chosen site, an eight-acre parcel formerly home to a Sears store and purchased in 2021, received rezoning approval in 2024 and a development agreement with the city. Officials aim to start construction before the end of the year, with the project expected to take three to five years and feature multiple buildings, the tallest rising just over 200 feet.

The fate of the historic campus remains undecided, though some services may be retained. Salt Lake County officials have asked the city council to ensure the new hospital includes more inpatient behavioral-health resources than the current facility provides.
