International Team Launches Search for Amelia Earhart's Lost Aircraft at Nikumaroro

A multinational team of seventeen scientists and engineers departed for the remote Nikumaroro Atoll in Kiribati to investigate a puzzling underwater formation known as the “Taraia Object.” The expedition, led by Richard Pettigrew, will first capture high‑resolution video and sonar scans, then use magnetometers and a hydraulic suction system to gently expose the object. Researchers will also search the surrounding shoreline for any floating wreckage. The goal is to determine whether the formation is part of Amelia Earhart’s missing Lockheed Electra aircraft.
