International Weightlifting Federation awards 2030 World Championships to Moscow

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has selected Moscow to host the 2030 weightlifting World Championships, following India's 2029 event.

The International Weightlifting Federation confirmed that Moscow will be the venue for the 2030 weightlifting World Championships, with India slated to host the 2029 competition. The decision comes after the IWF removed all participation restrictions on athletes from Russia and Belarus, who had previously been barred due to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Since the easing of those bans, Russian and Belarusian lifters have been allowed to compete under neutral flags and later without any limitations.

IWF Secretary-General José Quiñones praised the applications and anticipated that the upcoming championships in both countries will be major successes. The most recent World Championships took place in Førde, Sunnfjord, Norway.

Why it matters

The hosting decision highlights the sport's return to Russia after a period of international bans.
