Internships Evolve into Direct Hiring Pathways, Shaping IT Entry-Level Jobs
A Deloitte India report finds that converting internships to pre-placement offers has risen about 6% year-over-year, prompting firms to treat internships as a strategic talent pipeline, especially in the IT sector.
According to Deloitte India's Campus Workforce Trends 2026 report, pre-placement offer conversion rates have grown by about 6% compared with the previous year, reflecting broader adoption of internship-to-hire programs. The study attributes the rise to firms’ desire to improve hiring efficiency, retain talent proven in real projects, and lower external recruitment risks. Deloitte partner Neelesh Gupta reports that 65-70% of organizations now fund structured apprenticeships and long-term internships, often locking in candidates after a two-month assessment period.
TeamLease Digital CEO Neeti Sharma describes the shift as moving from "hire and train" to "test and hire," with roughly 80% of employers planning to increase apprentice intake. Intellipaat founder Diwakar Chittora adds that internships provide a fuller view of a fresher’s problem-solving, collaboration, and cultural fit, which brief interviews cannot capture. While the trend is strongest in the IT sector, experts say campus hiring will continue alongside these programs, with internship conversions accounting for 15-20% of a class and overall hiring remaining a hybrid model.
