Intersyndical coalition calls for nationwide strike and protest
A coalition of French unions, including the CFDT, CGT and FO, has urged private and public sector workers, retirees and youth to strike and demonstrate on an upcoming Thursday.
A broad inter-union alliance comprising the CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa and FSU has announced a coordinated strike and demonstration for workers across both private and public sectors, as well as retirees and young people. The mobilization is positioned as a protest for better wages, preservation of public services, job security and industrial vitality. In its communiqué, the coalition describes a “historic downgrading” of workers’ purchasing power, noting that prices for fuel, food, rent, gas and electricity continue to rise while salaries and pensions stagnate.
It also warns that the nation is approaching recession and that layoff plans are spreading in industry, retail and service sectors. The unions present the upcoming action as a necessary response to these economic pressures and to demand policy changes.
Why it matters
The strike reflects growing discontent over cost-of-living pressures and could disrupt key sectors of the French economy.
