Intruder breaches Darwin air force base, assaults staff and flees in stolen car

A man illegally entered RAAF Base Darwin, attacked a defence member and drove off in a stolen vehicle before disappearing.

Yesterday afternoon an unauthorised person breached the perimeter of RAAF Base Darwin in the Northern Territory and assaulted a defence force member. After the attack the intruder escaped the base in a stolen car, prompting lockdown protocols to be activated. Security personnel, the Joint Military Police Unit, Northern Territory Police and Australian Federal Police responded to the scene.

The stolen vehicle was spotted travelling southbound on the Stuart Highway near Winnellie around 4:30 pm, and officers pursued it before losing visual contact. This marks the second security incident at the base in recent weeks, following a training-related lockdown earlier in the month. Police investigations are continuing to locate the suspect.

Why it matters

The breach raises concerns about security at Australian defence installations and public safety.
