Invasive carp dominate massive fish die-off along Mississippi as heat and low water strain ecosystem

Hundreds of dead fish have washed ashore on the Mississippi River in Missouri and Illinois, with about 90% identified as invasive silver and bighead carp, likely killed by warm water, low levels and reduced oxygen.

A large number of fish have been found dead along stretches of the Mississippi River in both Missouri and Illinois, creating a stark scene for visitors. Laboratory analysis at Riverside Landing Park in St. Charles County revealed that roughly nine out of ten of the carcasses belong to invasive silver and bighead carp, species that have proliferated across U.S. waterways. According to Dan Zarlenga of the Missouri Department of Conservation, the combination of scorching summer temperatures, lower river levels and diminished dissolved oxygen created lethal conditions, especially for carp that congregate in shallow water.

Local resident James Bushdiecker, who first noticed the dead fish while walking his dog, said he was not saddened by the loss of the invasive species. Reports of similar dead carp have emerged near the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton, Illinois, as well as in Pike and Lincoln counties, indicating a broader regional impact. While the sight is unsettling, officials argue that the die-off could benefit native fish by reducing competition and that the carcasses will serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife downstream.
