Invasive spotted lanternfly detected for first time in Hungary and the EU
Hungarian authorities confirmed the presence of the spotted lanternfly, marking its inaugural detection in both Hungary and the European Union.
The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) announced that the spotted lanternfly, a quarantine pest, has been confirmed in Hungary, representing the first verified occurrence within the European Union. The discovery stemmed from a summer 2026 report by a resident of Bács-Kiskun County, who sent photos of the insect to authorities. Subsequent lab testing confirmed the species, leading to immediate containment actions.
The lanternfly feeds on more than 100 plant varieties, including grapevines, fruit trees and ornamental species, and can weaken plants through extensive sap-sucking. Its presence also facilitates secondary infections and other pests. Officials stress the importance of rapid public reporting to prevent further spread.
