A criminal investigation has been initiated by the Toulouse prosecutor's office concerning the discovery of two fetal remains and two newborn bodies in a medical waste container close to the former forensic institute's mortuary at the Rangueil hospital. The case has been assigned to the Haute-Garonne interdepartmental police, which will examine possible offenses against corpse integrity and unlawful handling of sealed evidence.
Authorities clarified that the anatomical material consisted of sealed samples taken during judicial expertises between 2000 and 2016. Hospital administrators, after an internal review, suspect an isolated act by a professional and have placed an employee on suspension, without specifying the role. No suspect is currently in police custody.
The regional health authority has launched an administrative audit, emphasizing that the incident starkly violates established procedures. Union representatives expressed shock and called for protection of the mortuary staff's reputation.
