Investigation links Xavier Becerra to Mexican consular network and activist NGOs
A new report alleges that gubernatorial frontrunner Xavier Becerra has long-standing connections with Mexican consulates and radical migrant NGOs that coordinate political activity in the United States.
The Government Accountability Institute’s latest probe asserts that Xavier Becerra’s political base is deeply embedded in a web of Mexican diplomatic posts and activist nonprofits that focus on migrant rights and Democratic voter mobilization. Groups such as the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), UnidosUS, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation have allegedly partnered with Mexican consulates to run voter-registration centers, naturalization services and workshops on avoiding deportation.
The report highlights past collaborations, including a 1994 effort to challenge California’s Proposition 187 and recent joint “Know Your Rights” sessions near the Los Angeles consulate. Opponent Steve Hilton has accused Becerra of leveraging illegal-immigrant canvassers for his campaign, while former Mexican officials are quoted as encouraging consulates to engage in “militant activities.” Becerra has publicly lauded CHIRLA, calling it his family, and has long spoken at events hosted by these organizations, underscoring the alleged alignment of domestic political goals with Mexico’s foreign policy objectives.
