Investigative journalist Micah Reddy disappears in Djibouti, family and NGOs demand answers

South African investigative reporter Micah Reddy, the Africa editor for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, traveled to Djibouti on Thursday and was last heard from on Saturday, when he called his brother Niall around 11 a.m. and messaged colleagues at about 1 p.m. After that, messages to him failed to deliver. He was staying at the Escale International hotel and was last seen meeting his fixer Kooki Mahmoud in the lobby.

Neither the journalist nor Mahmoud have been located, prompting the Committee to Protect Journalists to call on Djiboutian authorities to verify their whereabouts and release them if detained. South African and British officials have asked Djibouti for information, but the family has received no clear update. A senior Djibouti presidential official said Reddy had not applied for media accreditation, suggesting a need to check visa records.
