Investor Brad Gerstner pushes to open Trump Accounts to all under-40 Americans
Brad Gerstner is urging Congress to extend tax-advantaged Trump Accounts, currently limited to minors, to every U.S. citizen younger than 40.
Investor Brad Gerstner, who helped design the Trump Accounts program, is advocating for legislation that would make the tax-favored accounts available to all Americans under 40, not just minors. In an interview he explained that the change would require a new law, allowing private contributions from employers, philanthropists and corporations to flow into the accounts without an initial government grant. Recent donor commitments, including Elon Musk’s plan to give each U.S. child a SpaceX share, have highlighted the program’s popularity.
Gerstner cited the forthcoming Saver's Match under the bipartisan SECURE 2.0 law as an example of federal support for retirement savings. He said he is drafting legislation that could be introduced within months, potentially making the funding mechanism permanent. The proposal’s cost and the likelihood of congressional backing, especially regarding matching funds, remain unclear.
Why it matters
