iOS 27 Extends GymKit Support to iPhone and AirPods Pro 3

Apple’s iOS 27 adds GymKit compatibility to iPhone, letting AirPods Pro 3 supply heart-rate data for workouts on compatible cardio machines.

Apple expands its GymKit ecosystem in iOS 27 by allowing iPhone users to connect to GymKit-compatible cardio equipment via NFC, the same technology used for contactless payments. When paired with AirPods Pro 3, the earbuds transmit heart-rate data to the iPhone, which then shares the information with the machine and logs the session in the Fitness app. The update does not broaden the list of compatible devices; the gym equipment must still include Apple’s GymKit integration.

If the equipment lacks GymKit, the iPhone and AirPods continue to track workouts independently but cannot exchange data with the machine. The new workflow offers a backup for users who forget or cannot charge an Apple Watch, though it still depends on having the latest iOS and AirPods Pro 3. Overall, the change aims to revive GymKit’s adoption by leveraging more common Apple hardware.

Why it matters

It lets iPhone users track detailed workout data without an Apple Watch, potentially boosting GymKit usage.
