Iowa man charged with multiple attempted murders after highway shooting spree
A 27-year-old Iowa resident was arrested on four counts of attempted murder after firing at several vehicles on Interstate 35, wounding a woman in a Subaru.
Authorities allege that Andrew Darrick Tanaka, 27, of West Des Moines, engaged in a series of shootings on Interstate 35 near mile marker 56 on Monday afternoon. After a Subaru Outback passed his black Chevrolet Equinox, Tanaka fired at least two rounds through its driver’s side window, wounding the woman behind the wheel in her left shoulder. He then pursued a black BMW, firing another round through its driver’s side window.
Continuing north, Tanaka rear-ended a gray Nissan Altima carrying two occupants and, when they stopped to check on him, exited his vehicle and shot at the car’s windshield. The wounded woman was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Law enforcement located Tanaka on the highway shoulder, where he held a handgun before being arrested. He has been booked on four counts of attempted murder, and the incident prompted the temporary closure of the interstate while investigators processed the scene.
