Iowa Republican co-sponsors bipartisan bill to cap insulin at $35 per month

Iowa’s Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, a Republican in a highly competitive midterm race, announced she will co-sponsor the bipartisan “Improving Needed Safeguards for Users of Lifesaving Insulin Now” (INSULIN) Act alongside Democrat Diana DeGette. The legislation seeks to cap out-of-pocket insulin expenses at $35 per month for private-insurance enrollees, matching the existing Medicare limit. Miller-Meeks, who narrowly won reelection in 2024 and now faces former Democratic state Rep. Christiana Bohannan, views the measure as a way to attract undecided voters amid widespread concern over health-care costs.
She previously voted with a small Republican minority to extend the Medicare insulin cap in 2022, and her medical background in ophthalmology informs her focus on diabetes-related complications. The INSULIN Act passed the Senate health committee in July and is pending a full Senate vote, while Miller-Meeks is lobbying House leadership to move it forward before the November elections, though passage before then is uncertain.
