Apple's 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Max retains the familiar aluminium chassis of the prior model, with only new colour finishes and a reduced Dynamic Island distinguishing it visually. Under the hood, the device adds a mechanically variable aperture on the primary sensor, allowing manual selection of four f-stops and offering new creative control for photos and video. The A20 Pro processor, inspired by Apple's M-series, enables on-device AI tasks for third-party apps and improves performance while keeping temperatures lower than earlier Pro Max phones.

Battery endurance improves by roughly two hours, and the phone manages heat better during demanding workloads. Minor drawbacks include occasional Face ID recognition failures and a few instances of the phone freezing into recovery mode, though no data loss occurred.
