IPTA Wi-Fi rollout to finish by September with over half of campuses online

The RM664 million IPTA Wi-Fi rollout, backed entirely by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission through the Universal Service Provision programme, targets 539 public higher-education and skills-training sites nationwide. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that 55 % of the locations - 294 campuses - already have Wi-Fi, and the entire network is expected to be operational by September.

Phases 1 and 2 have been completed at 191 campuses, while Phase 3 is progressing at institutions managed by MARA and the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), with 42 of 204 sites finished and 60 of 110 MARA sites online. At Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, 302 additional Wi-Fi 6/7 access points were installed on Aug 27, ahead of the MCMC target, raising the campus total to 410 APs. The upgrade covers lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, student centres and residential facilities, aiming to boost internet reliability for students. Muhammad Quwayyis Khairuddin, a UTeM student representative, said the added capacity is a valuable contribution that will help students complete assignments and projects.
