Iran accuses United States of insincerity in nuclear talks and cites false claims
Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the United States is not serious about negotiations and is using false nuclear allegations to justify its actions.
At a weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei accused the United States of lacking sincerity in talks, claiming Washington confuses diplomacy with imposing demands on Tehran. He said the US has made false statements and offered no fresh European negotiation proposal beyond a political declaration, while Britain, France and Germany have followed the US line on restoring UN sanctions and failed to denounce the February 2025 military strikes.
Baqaei stressed that Iran never possessed nor sought nuclear weapons, pointing to its good-faith compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement and the US withdrawal three years earlier. He blamed Israeli claims about a nuclear bomb as a pretext for US military action. The spokesman referenced the June 18 memorandum of understanding, brokered by Pakistan and signed by Donald Trump and Pezeshkian, intended to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but noted continuing disputes over the naval blockade, sanctions and navigation. He concluded that restoring security to the Strait remains central to any future US-Iran negotiations.
Why it matters
The dispute affects regional security and the future of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the United States.
