Iran announces discovery of over 200 billion cubic metres of natural gas

Iran's oil minister said a new field in southern Fars province holds more than 200 billion cubic metres of gas.

Iran's oil minister, Mohsen Paknejad, announced that a gas field in the southern part of Fars province contains in excess of 200 billion cubic metres of natural gas. He noted the gas is of a "sweet" quality, which should lower both development and operating expenses. Tehran estimates its pre-war production at around 650 million cubic metres per day, equating to about 240 billion cubic metres per year.

The nation is currently restoring energy facilities damaged during the war with Israel and the United States. Officials also expect to recover roughly 100 million cubic metres per day of production capacity in the coming months after strikes reduced output by about 230 million cubic metres per day since the conflict began in late February. Upcoming U.S. sanctions could further challenge Iran's economy.

Why it matters

The discovery could boost Iran's energy output and revenue amid infrastructure repairs and looming sanctions.
