Iran blames US-Israeli strikes for severe environmental harm in Asaluyeh
Iranian officials say recent US-Israeli attacks on oil and refinery sites in Asaluyeh have caused massive air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions.
At a Tehran conference on ecocide, Iran’s foreign minister declared that the environment can no longer be considered a silent casualty of conflict, pointing to recent devastation in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. He highlighted that US-Israeli attacks on Iranian oil, refinery and energy infrastructure have created serious environmental hazards. Shina Ansari, who leads the country’s Department of Environment, quantified the fallout from strikes on fuel storage tanks in Asaluyeh, noting the release of roughly 904 tonnes of particulate matter, 4,700 tonnes of volatile compounds, over 13,000 tonnes of sulphur oxides and 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Ansari warned that such emissions jeopardize Iran’s efforts to curb greenhouse gases and called for climate justice and international accountability for war-related ecological damage.
Why it matters
The alleged pollution from attacks threatens regional climate goals and raises calls for accountability for environmental damage in conflicts.
