Iran Extends Invitation to Rival Afghan Groups at Khamenei Funeral

During Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral, Iran hosted delegations from both the Taliban government and the anti-Taliban National Resistance Front, highlighting Tehran's strategy of engaging all Afghan factions.

In mid-July, Iran staged an elaborate funeral for Ayatollah Khamenei, inviting delegations from nearly 100 nations, including two opposing Afghan groups. The Taliban sent senior envoys Abdul Ghani Baradar and Amir Khan Muttaqi, while the National Resistance Front arrived under Ahmad Massoud and Mohammad Mohaqiq, with the announcer labeling them the "High Delegation of the Afghanistan Resistance" and invoking shared values of struggle and freedom.

Taliban officials denounced the invitation as Tehran playing both sides, while NRF supporters celebrated the public recognition. Iran's former Afghanistan envoy Hassan Kazemi Qomi explained the policy as acknowledging Afghanistan's diverse representation beyond the current Pashtun-dominated Taliban rule. Historically, Tehran has alternated support between the Taliban and anti-Taliban forces, a pattern that continued after the Taliban's 2021 return to power. By giving the NRF ceremonial parity, Iran signals a willingness to back the opposition as a future stakeholder, potentially reshaping regional diplomatic dynamics.
