Iran Shifts Oil Transport to Caspian Sea Route Amid Gulf Blockade
Facing a maritime blockade in the Persian Gulf, Iran is increasing shipments through the Caspian Sea, boosting traffic with Russian ports.
Iran is redirecting maritime trade toward the Caspian Sea as the Persian Gulf blockade hampers its southern ports. Analysts at Windward observed that tanker and Russian cargo ship movements off Iran's coast increased by 13%, totaling 235 vessels compared with the prior period, and Iranian vessels operating in Russian waters rose 7% to 152. The shift offers Iran a route less vulnerable to U.S. naval presence and strengthens ties with Russia.
Mohammad Reza Talaei, Iran's senior trade official, reported that more than 30% of the country's imports now flow through northern ports on the Caspian. This reorientation reflects Tehran's strategy to mitigate the impact of the Gulf restrictions.
