Iran warns it could strike European targets if Trump expands conflict

Iranian officials say Tehran is ready to hit U.S. bases in Europe, including Bulgaria and Cyprus, should President Trump intensify attacks on Iran.

Two sources close to Tehran indicated that Iran has mapped potential European targets, naming Bulgaria’s newly approved Bezmer air base and a British installation in Cyprus as possible sites for retaliation if President Trump proceeds with threats against Iranian infrastructure. A further one outlet said Iran could also consider attacks on undersea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz. These statements reflect a growing belief among Iran’s ruling circles that a full-scale war is inevitable, especially after the Supreme Leader elevated hardliners to key security roles.

The IRGC has already warned that any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory would be deemed a legitimate target, echoing earlier drone strikes on the UK’s Akrotiri base. Analysts note Iran’s long-range missile capability is limited but real, and the country may also rely on regional proxies such as Hezbollah and the Houthis. Recent incidents, including a missile launch toward Diego Garcia and a drone strike in Cyprus, illustrate Tehran’s expanding strike reach.

Why it matters

The threat of Iranian strikes on European sites could broaden a regional conflict into a wider security crisis.
