Iranian activist Soda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, 33, was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the supreme leader, conducting propaganda against national security, and collaborating with hostile governments. Authorities also charged her for transmitting a photograph of a missile impact site to a Persian-language outlet abroad. She has been incarcerated in Bandar Abbas Prison since March, spending 20 days in solitary confinement.
The case reflects a broader pattern of harsh penalties, as UN officials note a rise in death sentences intended to intimidate the populace. Human-rights groups report at least 29 protest-related detainees have been executed since March, and the country has logged 950 executions this year. Shamsabadi’s final Instagram post hinted she accepted the possible outcome of her activism.
