Iranian state media deploy AI-generated images of Supreme Leader for propaganda
Iran’s IRIB has been publishing AI-enhanced photos of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Jamenei, using old pictures to create the illusion of recent appearances.
Iran’s state media network IRIB has begun circulating AI-modified pictures of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Jamenei, blending elements from earlier public appearances with digitally altered backgrounds and enhanced clarity. The practice stems from a lack of fresh visual content following the death of a prominent cleric, prompting officials to rely on synthetic imagery for propaganda. These AI-crafted photos have been repeatedly deployed on state-run television, radio, and news websites, as well as on the leader’s official X profile.
Experts warn that such technology enables autocratic regimes to fabricate a sense of continuity and downplay doubts about the leader’s health and leadership. While a few genuine videos of Jamenei have been aired, they lack timestamps, leaving questions unresolved. Parallel to state efforts, pro-regime social-media accounts also share AI-generated videos, some of which have been amplified by diplomats, suggesting coordinated disinformation campaigns.
Why it matters
AI-driven image manipulation lets authoritarian regimes shape public perception and conceal leadership uncertainties.
