Iraqi F-16s bomb ISIL stronghold in Diyala province
Iraqi F-16 fighter jets carried out two airstrikes on an ISIL position in the Narin area of Diyala, destroying the site.
Iraqi authorities said that on Oct. 11 two F-16 fighter jets bombed an ISIL position in the Narin area of the eastern Diyala province, wiping out the site. The mission was guided by intelligence supplied by the Military Intelligence Directorate and was synchronized with the military’s aerial reconnaissance and surveillance centre. The Security Media Cell confirmed the target was fully destroyed but did not disclose any casualty numbers, promising further details later.
This strike occurred less than two weeks after the United States-led coalition formally ended its anti-ISIL campaign in Iraq on Sept. 30. Iraq had declared victory over ISIL in December 2017, yet it continues to conduct operations against remaining militants. The latest airstrike underscores the ongoing effort to eradicate the group’s remnants.
Why it matters
It shows Iraq’s continued military pressure on ISIL remnants despite the coalition’s withdrawal.
