IRDAI pushes back deadline for comments on insurance distribution overhaul
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has extended the feedback deadline for its distribution reform proposals to October 31, 2026.
In September, IRDAI published a consultation paper proposing a comprehensive revamp of insurance distribution, including reduced expense-of-management limits and new commission ceilings tailored to products and channels. The regulator has already logged more than 650 stakeholder comments. Citing strong engagement, IRDAI announced on Saturday that the deadline for submitting feedback will now be October 31, 2026, instead of the previously set October 25.
The suggested framework also distinguishes between individual and corporate distributors, granting higher caps to individuals to reflect greater sales effort. The Insurance Brokers Association of India previously requested an extension until the end of December. IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth emphasized that the regulator will carefully evaluate each suggestion and expects stakeholders to justify the business and consumer benefits of their proposals.
Why it matters
The extension gives insurers, brokers and the public more time to shape rules that could affect insurance costs and market dynamics.
