Irish court grants protection orders in multiple domestic abuse cases

A Dublin emergency domestic violence court issued protection orders for a daughter alleging severe abuse by her parents and for two women alleging abuse by former partners.

At the emergency domestic violence court in Dolphin House, Dublin, Judge Gerard Furlong granted a protection order to a daughter who testified that her father threatened to kill her, removed the door to her bedroom, slept outside her room, attempted to strangle her and threw her down stairs, while her mother imposed financial, psychological and emotional abuse and isolated her from friends. In a separate case, a woman obtained a protection order after her long-term partner pulled a door off its hinges and dropped it on her in a homeless hostel, also assaulting her with a mobile phone.

A third woman received a protection order against a former partner who flooded her with abusive messages, threatened self-harm, and displayed erratic behaviour in front of their children. All three applications were heard without the other side present, as industrial action by public-sector workers left only two courts operating in the Dolphin House complex that day.

Why it matters

The rulings highlight the court's role in safeguarding victims of severe domestic abuse amid limited judicial resources.
