Irish Government Greenlights €1.86 Billion National Maternity Hospital Build for 2033

The Irish cabinet has approved a €1.86 billion project to construct a new National Maternity Hospital at Elm Park, with work slated to start early next year.

The Irish government has given the go-ahead for a €1.86 billion National Maternity Hospital project, with construction to commence early next year at the Elm Park site adjacent to St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin. Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill announced the approval, naming John Sisk & Son as the primary builder and Designer Group as the reserved specialist contractor for M&E works. The seven-storey, 54,000-square-metre building will house 244 en-suite beds, five operating theatres and 24 birthing rooms, aiming to accommodate up to 10,000 deliveries each year.

Professor Jennifer Walsh, master of the NMH, described the move as a major advance for maternal and reproductive health services. The Department of Health said the design has passed all stakeholder reviews and external validation, with the budget excluding unforeseen global market shifts. Completion is targeted for 2033, promising state-of-the-art care for women and newborns with complex needs.

Why it matters

The project will modernise Ireland's maternity care, increasing capacity and improving outcomes for women and babies.
