Irish police X accounts hijacked to push cryptocurrency scams

The main An Garda Síochána X accounts were compromised and are now posting cryptocurrency wallet promotions.

An Garda Síochána’s principal X presence, including the @gardainfo and @gardatraffic accounts, appears to have been hacked. The compromised feeds are filled with numerous posts that promote a cryptocurrency wallet application and invite tagged users to claim XRP allocations. The intrusion was first noticed after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, and the @gardainfo handle was subsequently altered to @XummHelpx, while @gardatrafic retained its original name.

Both accounts now assert a location in the Netherlands, a claim that is likely false. The scheme mirrors common crypto-scam tactics that aim to lure followers of high-profile accounts. An Garda Síochána has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded.

Why it matters

A police agency's social media hack could expose followers to fraud and raises concerns about official account security.
