Irish premier urges calm as Drumcree parade standoff escalates

The Irish Government expressed “very, very concerned” about the latest flare-up in the Drumcree parade dispute, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin urging all sides to withdraw and mediate a solution. The Parades Commission recently granted a limited Orange Order procession down the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road, sparking protests and prompting the PSNI to stop multiple attempts by Orangemen to march. Martin commended the police and chief constable Jon Boutcher for prioritising safety over the past 48 hours.

He called on Sinn Féin and other parties to dial back rhetoric and engage in sensible, community-focused dialogue. Martin warned that the unrest threatens the progress made in community relations and could undermine the Stormont institutions, which face an Assembly election within a year. He also hinted at reforms to prevent any party from vetoing the convening of the Assembly after an election.
