Irish Prime Minister Calls Partition a Disaster in Wolfe Tone Tribute

Micheál Martin said partition was a disaster while speaking at a Wolfe Tone commemoration in Kildare, urging greater north-south dialogue.

At a Wolfe Tone remembrance event in Kildare, Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemned the partition of Ireland as a disaster that hindered social and economic development on both sides of the border. He highlighted Tone’s influence on figures such as Éamon de Valera, Seán Lemass and Countess Markievicz, arguing that true republicans should focus on building society rather than winning battles. Martin criticised calls for a “reckoning” over the Drumcree parade, advocating dialogue instead, and referenced the Good Friday Agreement as a product of constructive negotiation.

He lauded the Shared Island Initiative and the efforts of former leaders Albert Reynolds and Bertie Ahern to ease confrontations. The speech also noted the recent decision to bar the Orange Order from marching on Garvaghy Road, framing it as a step toward greater community understanding.

Why it matters

The remarks revive debate on Ireland’s division and stress the importance of cross-border cooperation.
