Irish Prime Minister to Lead New Cabinet Committee on AI Regulation and Impact
Prime Minister Micheál Martin will chair a newly created Cabinet committee on artificial intelligence, addressing its societal, economic and regulatory implications.
At today’s Cabinet meeting, Taoiseach Micheál Martin is set to introduce a new AI-focused committee that will examine the technology’s effects on society, the labour market and public-service deployment, as well as its regulation. He will do so while Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke briefs colleagues on the International AI Summit held at the RDS during Ireland’s EU Council presidency, where European commissioners, AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic, and representatives from Microsoft will speak.
The summit aims to showcase Ireland’s AI ambitions, building on the Digital Ireland strategy released in February and the AI Office of Ireland launched in August. In the same session, Burke will outline the Start Up Ireland programme, which plans to fund 1,000 new start-ups with €100,000 each and launch an AI accelerator. Additional Cabinet items include extensions to the Road Transport Support Scheme, a scheme to repair defective concrete blocks in social housing, the National Drugs Strategy 2026-2030, a review of doctoral education, and a five-year plan for the community and voluntary sector.
Why it matters
The committee will shape Ireland’s approach to AI, influencing regulation, economic growth and public-service use.
