Isamaa outlines plan to scrap climate ministry and launch scandals inquiry
Isamaa leader Urmas Reinsalu announced a platform that includes closing the climate ministry, cutting top salaries and creating a post-election scandals commission.
At a council meeting in Tallinn, Isamaa chairman Urmas Reinsalu launched the party’s election programme, promising citizens the right to call early elections and a post-2027 inquiry into political scandals with penalties for lying. The platform calls for shutting down the Ministry of Climate, slashing parliamentary and ministerial salaries, and introducing a supplementary budget to trim spending. Tax reforms include abolishing the motor-vehicle levy and reducing VAT on staple foods to 13% from July 2027.
Energy policy will prioritise domestic resources such as oil shale, while the party pledges an AI-driven productivity push and stricter requirements for the Estonian language in public venues. Reinsalu also criticised the Reform Party, Eesti 200 and the Social Democrats, accusing them of deception and political maneuvering.
Why it matters
The proposals could reshape Estonia's climate policy, fiscal priorities and electoral rules ahead of the 2027 vote.
