Isiah Thomas to join Knicks board as MSG splits into two companies

Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas will be added to the Knicks board of directors when MSG separates the Knicks and Rangers into distinct publicly traded firms.

Isiah Thomas is set to re-enter the Knicks sphere as a member of the team's board of directors once MSG finalizes its plan to spin off the Knicks and Rangers into separate publicly traded entities. The restructuring, pending NBA and NHL clearance, aims to create MSG Knickerbockers Corporation, which will own the Knicks and their G League affiliate, and MSG Rangers Corporation, which will control the Rangers, the MSG training complex, and the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Thomas' board seat is a typical shareholder-representative role, not a position that influences player decisions. His prior stint with the Knicks included five seasons as president and two as head coach, during which the franchise posted a losing record. He was also named in a sexual-harassment lawsuit that the organization settled for $11.5 million, though he faced no personal financial judgment. After leaving the Knicks, Thomas held various consulting and executive roles, including leading the WNBA's Liberty until its sale in 2019, and serving on the board of the Dolan-owned Sphere Entertainment.

Why it matters

Thomas' return to Knicks governance highlights ongoing leadership changes as MSG restructures its sports holdings.
