Islamic State Sahel branch kills 57 Niger security forces in twin assaults
A Sahel affiliate of Islamic State attacked two sites in Niger, leaving at least 57 security personnel dead, including soldiers and military police.
Islamic State's Sahel wing carried out coordinated assaults on two Nigerien military locations, resulting in at least 57 security personnel being killed. The first strike hit the Dabagu base in the Tahoua region, while the second targeted a police unit in Abala-Filingue, both situated several hundred kilometres from Niamey and close to the border with Mali. The Ministry of Defence reported that several soldiers remain missing after the attacks.
Since the 2023 coup that installed a military junta, the government has struggled to contain the long-standing jihadist insurgency, and morale among troops has been eroding. Discontent over the high casualty rates contributed to a brief mutiny attempt in August, which the junta quelled within hours. The recent killings underscore the persistent security challenges facing Niger.
