Israel commemorates two-year anniversary of strike that killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah

On September 27, 2026, Israel's Foreign Ministry observed the two-year milestone of the airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. The ministry hailed the operation as a decisive blow that weakened the Iranian-backed militia and could enable a more independent Lebanon and a hopeful future between the two neighbours. The 2024 raid involved at least a dozen 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs dropped on Nasrallah's hideout in the Dahiyeh quarter, with unnamed officials later indicating over 80 bombs were used.

A week after that attack, Israeli forces eliminated Hashem Safieddine, Nasrallah's maternal cousin and a top Hezbollah official, while earlier in July 2024 Fuad Shukr was also targeted. On the anniversary, Iran's Press TV aired rare footage showing Nasrallah being driven through Dahiyeh, a scene it claimed had not been broadcast before. Jawad Nasrallah, the leader's second-oldest son, said the series of strikes caused personal distress for his father and damaged the morale of Hezbollah fighters.
