Israel Defense Forces to create dedicated space warfare unit
Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the IDF will form a new division focused on military operations in space.
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed that the Israel Defense Forces will establish a dedicated space division to expand the military's reach beyond Earth. The new unit, headed by a newly appointed brigadier general, will oversee the development of satellite communications, surveillance and offensive capabilities, with the goal of monitoring, defending and striking from space. Katz called the initiative a "blue-and-white Star Wars" program designed to transform Israel into a leading global military space power.
Senior officials noted that secret satellite bases across the country already enable digital freedom in operations against Iran. The move mirrors similar statements by U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink, who confirmed the United States also fields on-orbit weapons. During recent conflicts, Israeli satellites provided extensive imaging and early-warning alerts that protected civilians, according to former Israel Space Agency chairman Isaac Ben-Israel.
Why it matters
The new unit signals Israel's entry into the growing arena of space-based warfare, affecting regional security dynamics.
