Israel Leverages Anti-Muslim Rhetoric to Bolster Western Support Amid Declining Image

Israel is intensifying Islamophobic messaging to preserve its reputation in the West, tying anti-Muslim sentiment to its foreign-policy narrative.

Recent discussions with a Republican congressional staffer revealed the emergence of a “Sharia-Free America Caucus,” highlighting a surge in Islamophobic discourse within U.S. politics. This shift coincides with Israel’s own diplomatic push, exemplified by a January anti-Semitism summit in Jerusalem that gathered leaders from Poland’s PiS, Spain’s Vox, Hungary’s Fidesz and France’s Rassemblement National. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly framed the battle against “radical Islam” as central to Israel’s security narrative, even warning of a future Islamic nuclear state in Britain.

A confidential study hired by Israel’s Ministry of one outlet indicated that amplifying fear of “radical Islam” could improve American support for Israel. The findings have fed into coordinated propaganda, including a 2024 Canadian operation under the banner United Citizens for Canada that warned of Muslim immigrants imposing Sharia law. Although Muslim congressional hopefuls like Abdul El-Sayed have achieved primary victories, the broader campaign has contributed to rising anti-Muslim attacks, such as the San Diego mosque shooting. Critics argue the approach seeks to replace Israel’s waning moral standing with a fear-based appeal, posing a challenge to pluralistic societies in the West.

Why it matters

It shows how state-driven Islamophobia is being used to reshape Western support for Israel, affecting minority communities and foreign policy.
