Israel's Attorney General Moves to Block Balad Leader from Knesset Ballot
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and State Prosecutor Amit Isman asked the Supreme Court to prevent Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh from standing in the upcoming Knesset election.
The legal team argued that Abu Shehadeh, who praised armed resistance against Israel in an October 8, 2023 article, should be disqualified. The request was submitted to Israel’s top court on Tuesday. If granted, the Balad party would lose its leader as a candidate in the national vote. The move follows a longstanding debate over Arab-Israeli politicians’ rhetoric. The case highlights tensions between security concerns and electoral rights.
