Israel shells Quneitra farmland as Qatar and Jordan denounce Golan excavation

Israeli forces fired artillery at farmland between Buraiqa and Kodana in southern Quneitra, while Qatar and Jordan condemned Israel’s renewed digging on the contested “Sofa 53” road near the occupied Golan.

Israeli artillery struck farmland between the villages of Buraiqa and Kodana in southern Quneitra. Simultaneously, the Syrian Foreign Ministry, along with officials from Qatar and Jordan, condemned Israel’s resumption of excavation on the “Sofa 53” project, a military road also dubbed the “Great Storm.” The road, begun in 2022, lies within the buffer zone established by the 1974 disengagement agreement and extends toward the tri-border area of Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Damascus labeled the excavation a flagrant breach of the 1974 deal. Qatar described the work as an infringement of Syrian sovereignty and a danger to regional stability, while Jordan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Fuad Majali urged Israel to cease all actions targeting Syria. The three nations called for an immediate stop to the construction, highlighting heightened tensions over the occupied Golan Heights.

Why it matters

The incident raises diplomatic tensions over disputed territory and threatens stability in a volatile region.
