Israeli army delayed response to settler threats in West Bank, probe launched
The Israeli military waited almost two hours before acting on distress calls about a settler attack in the occupied West Bank, intervening only after the violence ended.
Around 1 pm on Saturday, activists alerted the Israeli military to a violent incident involving masked settlers attacking Palestinians and diplomats in the occupied West Bank, even providing video evidence and precise coordinates. Although the operations centre logged the distress calls, the Civil Administration and on-site troops were not notified until roughly 3 pm, by which time the attackers had left. The army has now initiated a special probe to determine why real-time action was not taken.
Yesh Din, an Israeli rights organization, reported 377 incidents of settler and soldier violence between 27 September and 10 October, averaging about 27 daily across 162 Palestinian communities, with 174 linked to olive harvests and soldiers present in a quarter of the cases. The group argues that the lack of enforcement reflects a broader policy harming Palestinian livelihoods.
Why it matters
The delay highlights challenges in protecting Palestinians from settler violence and raises questions about military accountability.
