Israeli attacks kill at least five in Gaza, including a 7-year-old girl

Israeli ground and air strikes in Gaza have killed at least five people, among them a seven-year-old girl, and injured more than a dozen others.

Israeli forces carried out ground and air operations in Gaza that resulted in at least five fatalities, including a seven-year-old girl, and left more than a dozen injured. Medical sources said an air strike on a displaced-people camp in the al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis killed three individuals—Hossam al-Zamli, 21; Tamer Abu Sneima, 24; and Jouri al-Soufi, 7—while a drone attack on the Remal neighbourhood west of Gaza City killed another person.

Palestinian Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal reported 11 deaths and 50 injuries across Gaza in the last 24 hours. Al-Shifa Hospital and Nasser Hospital confirmed the identities of the victims and described severe shrapnel damage. Additionally, Israeli quadcopter drones ignited a camp for displaced people at the Shujayea junction, forcing over 200 families, more than 800 individuals, to flee. The Gaza Ministry of Public Works and Housing condemned the fire and called for urgent international assistance.

Why it matters

The deaths highlight the ongoing civilian toll of the Gaza conflict and the vulnerability of displaced populations.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Both camps report the Israeli strike on the Islamic University and civilian casualties, but left-leaning coverage highlights a broader toll including a 7-year-old girl and frames the attacks as a grave assault on civilians and education, while centrist coverage focuses on the specific university casualties, notes the Israeli army’s review, and stresses condemnation of the strike and its impact on the education sector.

LEFT

Frames the incident as a civilian tragedy with children killed and attacks on education, emphasizing condemnation of Israeli actions.

CENTER

Frames the incident as a news report of the university strike, noting Israeli review and condemning the attack on students and staff.

The left emphasises

  • at least five fatalities, including a seven-year-old girl
  • three staff killed and eight students wounded at the Islamic University
  • condemnation of attacks on students and universities
