Israeli foreign minister slams Iranian counterpart for lecturing France on protests

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi of hypocrisy for defending freedom of assembly in France while Iran suppresses its own demonstrators.

Gideon Sa’ar used his X account to denounce Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for invoking the principle of freedom of assembly while Iran continues to imprison and execute protesters. Sa’ar reminded readers of the thousands killed in Iran’s January crackdown, labeling the Iranian government as a terror exporter. Araghchi had previously accused French President Emmanuel Macron of encouraging atrocities against Iranians and suggested that French citizens are calling for broad political change, including assembly rights.

The Israeli minister’s rebuke frames the Iranian comments as hypocritical and underscores the stark contrast between the two nations’ domestic policies. This public spat adds another layer to the strained relations between Israel and Iran, with France caught in the rhetorical crossfire. The incident reflects broader disputes over human-rights standards in international discourse.

Why it matters

The clash illustrates how rival states use human-rights rhetoric to undermine each other's credibility on the global stage.
