Israeli reservists and settlers blur lines in West Bank violence
An investigation reveals that Israeli reservists serving in settlement-protecting units participated in a deadly attack on a Palestinian village, where several Mouammar family members were killed or wounded.
A recent probe into violence in the West Bank shows that Israeli reservists recruited from settlement areas took part in an attack on Qaryout, where a bulldozer was used to clear a path through village land. The assault left Mohammed Mouammar dead from a head wound, his brother Fahim dead shortly after, and Jamil Mouammar wounded in the leg. According to a surviving family member, two of the assailants were armed with M-16 rifles and also served in units tasked with protecting settlements.
The Israeli army arrived roughly ninety minutes after the shooting, detained several Palestinians for interrogation, but failed to arrest any Israeli participants. The investigation identified one of the shooters as an active-duty reservist from a regional defense unit, highlighting the increasingly blurred distinction between the army and settler militias.
