Istanbul police seize three fugitive members of the Gülenist Terror Group

Istanbul authorities arrested three wanted individuals linked to the Gülenist Terror Group, including a former media editor who had evaded capture for ten years.

Istanbul law enforcement announced the capture of three fugitives associated with the Gülenist Terror Group. The suspects are Mehmet Yılmaz, Abdullah Ilık and Serdar Uluocak. Yılmaz, who previously worked as an editor and editor-in-chief for outlets controlled by the group, including the now-defunct Zaman, had been a user of the encrypted app ByLock and had avoided arrest for ten years.

Ilık, described as a high-level operative, oversaw secret preparatory schools run by the organization and had been at large for three years after a court sentenced him to more than six years in prison. The third suspect, Uluocak, is a police officer linked to the group. Their detention follows a series of daily actions by investigators to dismantle the extensive network that survived the coup attempt, which led to mass detentions and dismissals across the country.

Why it matters

The arrests show continued pressure on the Gülenist network that remains a security focus after the 2016 coup attempt.
