Italian court upholds shutdown of hot zone at former Ilva plant

The Civil Court of Appeal in Milan has upheld the measure ordering the shutdown of the hot zone at the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto. Lawyers for Acciaierie d’Italia and the plant’s extraordinary administration sought a suspension of the order, but the judges rejected the request. The original decision, issued at the end of July, obliges the plant to keep the hot zone inactive until all remaining asbestos is removed and appropriate measures are taken to bring fine-particle emissions within safety limits.
The court had previously reserved judgment on a request to pause the decree after a brief hearing. The appeal confirms that the plant must comply with the environmental and safety conditions before any restart.
